Reachable Line
A free help line you can call from any phone, at any time of day.
The Reachable Line is answered by an automated helper, not a person. It says so at the start of every call. If you need a person, it can ask a volunteer to call you back.
Who it's for
- Seniors and people with disabilities in the Victoria area.
- Anyone who finds websites, apps, and phone menus hard to use.
- People who only have a landline or a basic phone.
- Anyone who wants a slow, patient answer without being put on hold.
What you get
- Find a business or service. Ask for a pharmacy, a clinic, a food bank, a bus route, a government office. The helper reads back the phone number, the address, and the hours, slowly, and repeats anything you ask.
- Answers about benefits. Common questions about benefits for seniors and people with disabilities, using information our volunteers checked. It always tells you which program it is talking about and which phone number to call.
- A callback from a person. If your question needs a human, the helper takes your name, your number, and what it is about. A volunteer calls you back.
- Patience. Short sentences, spoken slowly. Interrupt it, ask it to repeat, take your time.
- No cost, no account, no app. Just a phone.
How to start
- Call the number at the bottom of this page. (The number is coming soon.)
- Say what you need in your own words. For example: "What are the hours of the downtown library?" or "Am I eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplement?"
- If you want a person, say "call me back". Or fill in the callback form below.
Good to know
- It is a computer. The helper uses artificial intelligence (AI) to understand what you say and to answer. It can make mistakes. Before you count on a benefit or an appointment, check with the office it points you to.
- Calls are recorded for quality. A volunteer listens to some calls to check the helper's work and fix its mistakes. Recordings are kept for a limited time and then deleted. See our privacy page.
- It never asks for private numbers. Not your Social Insurance Number, not bank or card numbers, not passwords. If you start to say them, it will ask you to stop, and it will not write them down.
- Calls are limited to about 15 minutes. You can always call again.
- If you are in danger, it will tell you to call 911, or 9-8-8 if you are thinking about suicide, and give you other crisis lines.
What we will never do
- Give medical, legal, or financial advice. If you ask, the helper says so kindly and gives you the right human line to call instead.
- Do things on your behalf. At launch the helper only looks things up and takes callback requests. It does not send email, fill in forms, or make appointments for you.
- Sell you anything, or give your number to anyone.
- Ask for your Social Insurance Number, bank details, card numbers, or passwords.
- Pretend to be a person.
Ask a volunteer to call you
Fill this in and a Reachable volunteer will call you back. A person, not the helper.
